You may not be aware that under certain conditions, water from irrigation systems, hot tubs, and other fixtures can force its way back into the main water supply, contaminating the public water. This occurs if there is a “cross connection” between the public water system and any liquid that could contaminate the water system and the contaminated liquid “backflows” into the drinking water. The way to prevent a cross connection is to install and maintain an effective backflow device. Backflow devices are mandated by both State and local law (City of West Sacramento, Municipal Code, Ordinance No. 90-13) on all commercial properties and fire systems. A permit and inspection is also required for all new installations.

As an added precaution, the City of West Sacramento annually tests all commercial backflow assemblies to comply with State and local law. If a device fails the annual city test, the property owner is required to make any necessary repairs and have a city certified tester re-test the device.
